Juan Manuel Fangio at the 1957 German GP
Juan Manuel Fangio II, nephew of five-time Formula 1™ world champion Juan Manuel Fangio, will take to the track at the wheel of a Maserati 250F as the world’s biggest annual sporting series celebrates its 60th anniversary at the 2010 Formula 1™ Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix on March 12-14.  As the first round of the 2010 season, Bahrain is hosting a landmark celebration with more than 20 title-winning cars and virtually every surviving world champion expected to attend.

Former sports car and IndyCar racer Fangio II will drive the evocative Maserati 250F in a spectacular cavalcade of title-winning cars that will form part of the on-track entertainment through the weekend.  In many minds his uncle remains the greatest driver of all time, and Fangio II is delighted to represent ‘the Maestro’ in Bahrain.

Ferrari F10

All eyes were on Maranello as Scuderia Ferrari launched its 56th single-seater racing car, primed for the Formula One circuits of the 2010 World Championship.

The new racing car, which Ferrari has named the F10, will compete in a season with one of the most talked about rule changes seen in Formula One for years, the ban on refuelling during a race.

Development for the Ferrari F10 started mid-season 2009 to ensure maximum competitiveness for the coming season. Ferrari is optimistic about the 2010 season, with a new driver line up and two extra races on the calendar.

2010 Rules and Regulations

Formula One’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), is always looking to increase the spectacle of the sport and 2010 will see some significant changes implemented as the perennial search for greater performance and efficiency continues.

The Phoenix rises - Michael Schumacher

Mercedes GP RB1
Mercedes GP RB1
The 2010 Formula 1™ Gulf Air Bahrain Grand prix sees the return of the biggest name in the sport for the past 15 years: Michael Schumacher.  Nobody in the 60-year history of the world’s biggest annual sporting series has more records, more victories, more championships, more points, more pole positions, more fastest laps, more fans or more detractors.

Having stepped wearily from the cockpit of his Ferrari at the end of yet another mesmerizing performance in the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix, few in the sport thought that they would ever see the return of the seven-time world champion.  The absolute dominance of the ‘Ferrari era’ that Schumacher had led from 2000-2004 had been ended by a new generation of talent, and it seemed that the story had come to an end.

Local Talent at First Hand

We meet Zaamin Jaffer, UAE talent and a budding race driver

Zaamin Jaffer
Zaamin Jaffer
Could you tell us something about your background?
I was born in Mumbai and lived in Dubai till the age of 14. Whilst I was living in Mumbai I was at boarding school in the UK as well and would spend my time between the UK and Mumbai. I then moved to Dubai with my family and now divide my team between the UK and Dubai for University and racing.

What encouraged you to want to become a racing driver?
After watching a Formula 1 race on television with my family, I became fascinated by the sheer speed of the cars and the whole event in general. The idea of racing at such high speeds, along with my cousin’s interest in the sport is what engaged me. We used to watch all the races every weekend on TV and the more I watched, the more my passion for the sport increased. Moreover, the fact that my family’s business involved construction equipment, I was constantly around engines and tools, which further contributed to my growing interest in the sport.
