Aston Martin has confirmed plans to launch the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet as early as next year. Designed to set “a new benchmark for compact luxury,” the Cygnet is Aston Martin’s answer to increasingly stringent fuel economy and emissions standards. The three-metre long, 3+1 city slicker is positioned below the Yaris in the Toyota line-up. However, none of that has stopped it from being an Aston Martin. Said to be part of its DNA is a hand-stitched leather/ Alcantara/ aluminium blended interior, just like certain other Astons. Personalisation and customisation options will also be available. Although powertrain details for the Cygnet haven’t been revealed, it will likely use a sub1.4-litre petrol engine with 97hp 23Nm of torque. This should enable the car to get a combined 55 mpg (UK) and emit 120g of CO2 per kilometer. According to Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez, “Whatever we do, we do right. If we do performance, we do performance; we don’t downsize or compromise our sports cars. The Cygnet needs to satisfy the demands of emissions and space. It is a car without compromise, just like every other Aston Martin.”
